The Great Migration is the largest mammal migration on earth, involving one ecosystem, two different nations, and millions of animals. 

The journey starts in the southern Serengeti with the birth of half a million wildebeest calves between January and March. 

As the plains dry up, the wildebeest are forced to move in search of greener pastures in the western corridor.

During this daunting journey, masses of wildebeest, as well as smaller herds of zebra, follow a hoop-like migratory route across the Serengeti and Maasai Mara game reserves.

This wildlife spectacle takes place throughout most of the year, but the climax occurs between July and October.

The migration is not without risk: crossing rivers means facing about 3,000 crocodiles, patiently waiting for a kill. Not to mention the famous Serengeti lion population: by far the largest in Africa. Despite the abundance of hoofed meat in this area, life is not easy for these big cats in this unforgiving landscape.

In addition to the seasonal migrants, you can see other animals like warthogs, elephants, buffaloes, hartebeests, and gazelles along the sidetracks. 

Troops of vervet monkeys and olive baboons are also commonly seen fanning out to forage.

The park inhabits more than 70 species of mammals and over 500 bird species. The borderlands area is also shared on both sides by the Maasai peoples, long associated with a pastoral and herding tradition of domesticated animals, but more recently through transformed engagement in conservation and tourism activities.
